Cycling False Bay Coast – One of the Most Scenic Roads in the World

Nestled along the southern shores of South Africa’s Western Cape, False Bay offers an unparalleled cycling experience that combines stunning coastal views, diverse wildlife, and charming coastal towns. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a weekend warrior, cycling along the False Bay coast provides a unique opportunity to explore one of the country’s most beautiful and ecologically rich areas.

Starting in Muizenberg, known for its iconic colorful beach huts and surfing culture, cyclists are greeted with a smooth, well-paved cycle path that hugs the coastline. The route meanders past sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and azure waters, providing ample opportunities for photography and sightseeing.

Here in the extreme southwest corner of South Africa, mountain passes and crags share the spotlight with beaches of every demeanor. From shy and secluded to show off wide and panoramic, the False Bay coast beckons.

I stop to see why there are so many lifeguards along the way. At least I think they are lifeguards although not a single piece of lifesaving gear is to be seen. In small buildings high above the beach the lifeguards in question groove to loud music while peering toward the ocean.

These are not lifeguards. They are shark watchers.

Looking at the wet suit covered surfers bobbing about below I hope the music loving dudes have extraordinarily good distance vision and very loud voices.

Not to worry says a local bystander. Shark attacks are pretty uncommon on the False Bay coast. Only two deaths since 2010.

“Some of the biggest great whites in the world here though.”

Mental note to self. No surf lessons on our rest day.

The False Bay coast line is perhaps most famous for its colonies of African Penguins near Simon’s Town. Truly one of the high points of our entire trip to Africa. More penguin stories to follow but for now one photo to share a glimpse of the 3000 waddlers in the colony.

Cycling along the False Bay coast is more than just a ride; it’s an immersive experience that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural exploration, and outdoor adventure. From the lively streets of Muizenberg to the serene beaches of Simon’s Town, this coastal route showcases the best of what the Western Cape has to offer.

So, grab your bike, put on your helmet, and set out to explore one of South Africa’s most breathtaking coastal routes. Whether you’re chasing the thrill of the open road or simply enjoying a leisurely ride, False Bay’s coastline promises an unforgettable cycling adventure.
